The Patrol Division is the largest division within the police department, providing quality law enforcement services to the public 24/7, 365 days a year. 16 full time police officers are assigned to the Patrol Division equally divided with four shifts. Each shift consists of one sergeant (supervisor) and three patrol officers. The officers work twelve hour shifts, working seven days in a two week cycle.

The Patrol Division is the backbone of our agency and is the most visible to the public as they respond to a wide variety of complaints and service calls within the 7.5 square miles of Orange City. On average, the police department responds to over 33,000 calls for service each year.  Protecting lives and property continues to be the goal of the patrol division.  To accomplish this goal, patrol officers are required to perform a multitude of tasks. In the City of Orange City, patrol officers are encouraged to be diligent in the performance of their duties so that the needs of the community are always considered. Consequently, members of the Patrol Division have six major objectives:

  • Prevention of crime
  • Repression of crime
  • Traffic enforcement and education
  • Apprehension of offenders
  • Recovery of stolen property
  • Provide various miscellaneous services

The prevention of crime is the most important of our six objectives.  Patrol officers endeavor to repress crime by removing or reducing the opportunities to commit crime. The apprehension of criminal offenders and recovery of stolen property reduces the overall cost of crime and diminishes the profit motive for committing crime. With regard to miscellaneous services, many times a citizen in need of assistance and not knowing where to call will contact the Police Department. Orange City Police Officers are always willing to help or give directions to the proper service.

In addition to patrol duties, Orange City officers are responsible for traffic enforcement and education. The mission of their traffic duties is to improve traffic safety through educational strategies and enforcement action. These strategies are designed to improve the efficient flow of traffic, reduce crashes and ultimately reduce traffic related injuries.
